In-Office Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinus dilation is a new, minimally invasive office procedure that reopens the sinus pathways and restores drainage to deliver immediate and long lasting relief to recurrent and chronic sinusitis sufferers. In balloon sinus dilation, your surgeon seeks to reshape anatomy by inflating small balloons in key places in the nose and sinus to expand sinus pathways and restore drainage.

The procedure involves placing a balloon in the sinus ostium and inflating the balloon to stretch the opening, restoring drainage, ventilation and aeration. It is a similar to angioplasty of the heart arteries, opening the clogged arteries with a balloon to restore blood flow. This procedure restores mucous flow and air flow allowing the sinuses to drain and breathe.

Sinus-Balloon-Dilation

Chronic sinusitis is characterized by purulent nasal discharge, usually without fever, that persists for weeks to months. Symptoms of congestion often accompany the nasal discharge. There also may be mild pain and/or headache.

In some cases of chronic sinusitis, surgical drainage may be necessary. Endoscopic sinus surgery or Balloon Dilation or both may be recommended. Poor sinus drainage, which leads to infection and discomfort, is the source of persistent or recurring sinus pain. Antibiotics, decongestants, and steroids can be used to minimize the discomfort of symptoms, but they do not fix the underlying drainage problem. By restoring sinus drainage, balloon sinus dilation can provide lasting sinus relief to qualified patients, and the sinusitis cycle.

Balloon sinuplasty surgery is used to treat chronic sinusitis symptoms including:

  • face pain
  • face pressure
  • chronic sinus headaches
  • chronic discharge from the nose or eyes
  • loss of the sense of smell
  • difficulty breathing through the nose
  • tenderness and swelling around the nose, forehead and eyes
  • sore throat (pharyngitis)
  • bad breath (halitosis)
  • fatigue
  • sleep problems caused by difficulty breathing

Balloon Sinus Dilation: Quick recovery, lasting results

Performed under local anesthesia with a mild oral sedative (Valium) or during a more extensive surgery under general anesthesia, balloon sinus dilation offers a new, in-office choice to sinusitis patients. Patients who have received balloon sinus dilation procedure have experienced significant improvement in sinusitis symptoms, and 90% return to normal activity within 48 hours.
