Dr. Howard Krauss

Howard-Krauss2

Dr. Howard R. Krauss was born and raised in The Bronx and began his professional life in engineering, with degrees from Cooper Union and MIT, followed by a position at Hughes Aircraft Company. Having then decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Krauss entered medical school and obtained his medical degree at the ripe old age of 27. This was followed by postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, Fellowship training in Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbital Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and then a 2-year stint as Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Southwestern Medical School, in Dallas, where he was Chief of Ophthalmology at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Chief of Neuro-ophthalmology, Oculoplastic Surgery and Strabismus, and Director of the Residency Training Program. Longing to return to the west coast, Dr. Krauss entered the private, clinical practice of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery in 1984.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Krauss is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery, and Director of Ophthalmology at Pacific Eye & Ear and the Pacific Neuroscience Institute (PNI).  He was a cofounder of the UCLA Skull Base Surgery and Orbitocranial Tumor Programs, and is presently active in Skull Base and Orbital Disease and Tumor care, in association with the PNI.  Drs. Krauss and Griffiths, in 2001, were the first in the world to devise and carry out Transnasal Image-Guided Endoscopic Orbital Tumor Surgery, a safer, less invasive and more efficacious approach to the management of orbital apex tumors.

Dr. Krauss has lectured locally, nationally, and worldwide, and has directed International Congresses of Ophthalmology in Santiago, Chile. He is a recognized expert in his field, has published numerous papers and book chapters, and has served as a reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals.  He is a founding member and past Member of the Board of the North American Skull Base Society, and Past President of the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the Los Angeles County Medical Association.  In addition to taking care of patients, researching, teaching, and publishing, Dr. Krauss has been an active participant in medical and professional organizations and endeavors; in 2013 he accepted Governor Brown’s appointment to the Medical Board of California, and he continues to serve as a Mentor Examiner of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Trustee of the California Medical Association and a Member of the Board of the California Ambulatory Surgery Association.
